Aquarius: The Archetype

Hello, friends! Today we’re exploring the archetype Aquarius! In this blog post we’ll be looking at the five main aspects of this dynamic, electrifying energy!

Note: Remember, when I refer to “Aquarius” I’m talking about the archetype in its purest form, not an individual person with an Aquarius Sun, Moon, Rising etc. We all contain and express this energy in different ways; the most important thing you can do is identify it in your own life. =)

1. The Humanitarian

Humanitarianism is one of the most dominant traits of this archetype. A “Humanitarian”, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is: “A person promoting human welfare and social reform.” Human rights might be the most important pursuit of Aquarius, and it’s interesting to note that Aquarius is the only Zodiac sign symbolized by an actual human being, which is a great reminder that humanity is at the forefront of this energy’s priorities. This humanitarian spirit also lends itself to environmentalism and animal rights as well, but first and foremost, Aquarius is focused on human rights and human welfare within society.

Aquarius is passionate about justice and equality for all. This archetype is focused on doing away with hierarchical systems such as a matriarchy or patriarchy that inevitably mean inequality and suffering for one party. Gender equality, racial equality, sexual equality…any kind of equality is right up Aquarius’s alley.

*The understanding that equality even exists between all beings is a higher state of awareness. This higher knowledge forces us to evolve our perspectives on what is fair, what is just, and what is ethical.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

-Martin Luther King Jr

Aquarius is passionate about issues like slavery, human-trafficking, fair wages, fair work places, and fair opportunities for all. The energy of Aquarius spurs us on to take action and put an end to unfair treatment on all levels. The difficult part is that we all might have different ideas of what “fair” and “equal” treatment actually looks like…So this can get complicated. But Aquarius also gives us the ability to be logical and methodical in our thinking so we can hopefully find the best solutions. It’s just important to remember to include our hearts in our problem solving as well. Sometimes Aquarius can chase after a principle more so than what is kind, loving and good. Balance is always key in order to create harmony.

Sexual equality is extremely important to Aquarius and something we can see being played out right now on the world stage. Aquarius’s deeply spiritual side allows this archetype to see beyond all physical boundaries, right down to the soul level, and what it finds is that gender does not dictate love or attraction. Aquarius broadens our minds and hearts to see that life as we have come to know it is not necessarily the best way to be. If we are to fully live our truth it might mean breaking societal norms and tearing down old structures that no longer support our evolution.

The key with Aquarius is always freedom. Even if we lived in a primarily same-sex society and heterosexual couples were the rarity and had less rights because of it, you can bet Aquarius would be fighting on their behalf…because what this energy really boils down to is a belief that each human being should have the freedom to fully express themselves, despite societal norms, religions, or long-held beliefs. Aquarius is always fighting to break down barriers and create an equal opportunity for self-expression.

“What is man born for but to be a reformer, a remaker of what has been made, a denouncer of lies, a restorer of truth and good?”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

2. The Innovator

Aquarius is the great innovator. No other energy can come up with such unexpected, out-of-the-box solutions like this one. This is the energy of genius. True genius, not merely intelligence. This energy is of the “mad scientist” and not the intellectual scholar simply regurgitating what he has been taught. This has nothing to do with an IQ test and everything to do with a human’s ability to think beyond. Aquarius teaches us to think for ourselves and to view reality in a completely different way than the masses. A definition of “Genius” from the Merriam-Webster dictionary refers to it as, “Extraordinary intellectual power especially as manifested in creative activity.” We must never forget that Aquarius is creative in all things. Creativity in itself is “genius”. Aquarius energy is open-minded, forward-thinking, and even prophetic in its ability to create and plan for the future.

“Science does not know its debt to imagination.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

Aquarius has a natural affinity for science. Any kind of experimentation is thrilling for this archetype. This can lead society to amazing and groundbreaking new advancements on the one hand, and on the other hand, it has the ability to completely obliterate everything in its path. Just like with all energies, they are multifaceted and it is up to us to temper them with love, compassion, and wisdom. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should, is an appropriate mantra for this archetype to keep in mind. It is up to each one of us to decide what to do with our power of invention. Because while Aquarius might be passionate about human rights on one hand, on the other, this energy is capable of putting all of humanity in jeopardy for the sake of progress. Ethics and science are definitely not synonymous but the abundance of Aquarian energy in the world today is certainly bringing these important issues to light.

Science and spirit have been at odds with each other for quite some time but the high road of Aquarius tells us BOTH can be right. Spirit, or “consciousness”, animates matter and matter functions in a brilliant, mechanized way. Why can’t spirit be organized and why can’t matter be directed by spirit? Just some Aquarian questions to ponder…Ultimately, the energy of Aquarius doesn’t want to be put in any kind of box…whether it’s scientific or spiritual. This energy wants FREEDOM above all. Freedom to think and ponder and evolve and create. Freedom to say, “I thought this was best the solution, but now I’ve found an even better way!” Curiosity and creative thinking must always be allowed to flourish for this archetype to thrive.

Uranus, the ruler of this archetype, rules electricity which explains why Aquarius is able to invent and understand technology so well. Aquarius literally thinks like a computer in terms of systems, processing, organizing, and transmitting information as quickly and efficiently as possible. Technology is also an essential tool for Aquarius to spread its message of equality and justice for all. Technology allows us to see all that is wrong with the world in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. Now, the information we receive through technology might be completely false or biased, and that of course leads us to another Aquarian issue, weeding out the truth from the lies…But in short, technology is a symbol of Aquarius’s inner mental workings and it can be a very powerful tool used to share information with the masses in a very quick way…All things this archetype is passionate about doing.

3. The Outcast

Aquarius is the outcast of the Zodiac, and rightfully so, this archetype doesn’t want to do what everyone else is doing anyway. This is the energy of the loner, the misunderstood, the mad scientist, and yet also the trailblazer, the rebel, and the genius. While Aquarius might be associated with “community” it is not a community of close friends. It is all the “friends” on social media that make your follower count look great, as well as the group of people that you hope will listen to what you have to say and take action accordingly. There is no emotional bond with these people because once again, Aquarian energy is projecting itself out there saying, “I have something important to say. Listen to me.” This self-expression can be done through art, writing, political action, or even a YouTube video about living a more minimalistic lifestyle.

“Be alone, that is the secret to invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born.”

-Nikola Tesla

At the end of the day, Aquarius wants to be alone to think and process and mull over life’s bigger issues. We can definitely see this energy active in “cults” where the cult leader would symbolize Aquarius, projecting off-beat ideas and naturally collecting followers that share the same unique viewpoint. The Aquarian archetype would define itself as the leader of the group, not a follower, and once the central ideas or beliefs of the cult became normalized, or even boring, this archetype would move on to greener pastures. Always the wanderer, this energy desires solitude and space to tap into that “genius” deep within.

Art is a very Aquarian way to spread a message. Art can be used as a political tool as well as a means to bring people together. Aquarius prefers interpretive art because it allows the viewer greater freedom in their perception. Creativity of all kinds can express feelings, individuality, and unique perspectives of reality; it has the ability to broaden our minds and open us up to new ways of seeing the world. Aquarius reminds us to never underestimate the power of art!

“Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

-Albert Einstein

Aquarius finds solutions to life’s problems through creative wandering. Curiosity and imagination are two of its essential tools. While sometimes eccentric and outlandish, this energy is always wanting to push the envelope of life in order to extract was true and what is pure. Unlimited freedom can be found through creative expression and ample amounts of alone time. And if this archetype is in some way hindered in its endeavor to create more freedom within humanity, art will always be an open door with which to pursue this quest.

4. The Anarchist

Aquarius is the energy of revolution. This archetype is a non-conformist at heart; regardless of the Age it’s born into, Aquarius will always find things to change within society and new and inventive ways to live. While part of this energy wants some kind of structure because it is ruled by Saturn, it also wants freedom and progress, because it is also ruled by Uranus. That’s what makes this energy so dynamic and at times chaotic…it can be of two minds and seem very paradoxical. But the magic of Aquarius is that even through individual and societal turmoil, this archetype is still capable of achieving peace and balance in the end.

Aquarius believes that in order to achieve freedom, disobedience of the system is necessary; this energy sometimes even uses violence and force to achieve its goals. This archetype is obviously very controversial…but it wouldn’t be Aquarius if it wasn’t! Sometimes things play out on the world stage that are not pleasant…but in the end humanity is satisfied with the results they brought. However, it’s always up to each individual to decide exactly what part they want to play in a revolution and if the ends justify the means. The interesting thing about this revolutionary energy is that it can become just as idealistic and fanatical as the force, government, or system that it is opposing. While desperately fighting against “out-dated” or rigid belief systems and societal structures, this archetype is capable of actually becoming close-minded, bigoted, and judgemental in its pursuit of peace. If ever there was a Zodiac sign with two faces, it would be this one!

“Freedom is not the right to do as you please, but the liberty to do as you should.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

We must always ask ourselves if we are losing our own humanity while fighting for human rights. It can be easy to get swept up in the wave of revolution and forget the wisdom of love. At the end of the day, at the end of your life, what will you want to be remembered for? Change and kindness can both work together to achieve one’s goals; we don’t have to forfeit one in order to gain the other.

5. The Awakener

And lastly, Aquarius wakes us up. This energy removes the blinders from our eyes and shows us the truth about the reality we live in. At first this can be a downright horrifying and painful process. After all, who really wants to see every single thing that is wrong with themselves or the world they inhabit? It can be too much to take in. We begin to question everything: What is real? What is right? What is reality? This can simply lead to madness. But insanity is not the end goal of Aquarius, it’s the means to an end; the end goal is freedom of consciousness. Aquarius knows that we are imprisoned first and foremost by our own thoughts and beliefs and lastly, by society itself. Without this energy we’d never question, change, or evolve. Waking up is necessary if we want to grow.

“People see only what they are prepared to see.”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

We can certainly see this “awakening” happening in the world right now, and it isn’t a very pretty sight because it initially creates a lot of chaos, anger, and fear. But once the dust settles, what you have is a greater awareness, and therefore, a wider perspective and deeper understanding of life. Growth is usually always painful but the reward is expansion and freedom, and thankfully, we have the dynamic, colorful, and innovative energy of Aquarius to get us there!

Where can you identify Aquarius energy in your life? Do you have a passion for change? Where would you most like to see change take place? How do you express the genius of Aquarius? Through art? Music? Inventions? Ideas? We all express this energy!

Thank you so much for studying Aquarius with me! I’d love to hear your thoughts as well! Next up we’ll be diving into the deep waters of the subconscious and exploring the endpoint of the Zodiac, Pisces!
